Opposition parties say the ban was a mere gimmick

LUCKNOW: The Mayawati government may have lifted the ban on the Madhuri Dixit starrer Aaja Nachle, even if conditionally, but it is amply clear now that it was enforced merely for reasons related to vote-bank politics.

Opposition parties also see it as a gimmick by the CM given the upcoming assembly polls in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh. The BSP is contesting all seats in both states. “Our government will not tolerate the humiliation of any section of society—whether they be upper castes, backwards or scheduled castes,” says BSP leader and cabinet minister Swami Prasad Maurya.

Angry BSP workers protested outside Sapna cinema hall in Kanpur Saturday morning after reports came in that tickets were being sold there despite the ban. BSP workers also gheraoed a theatre in Lucknow but the police prevented things from turning ugly.

At a press meet, cabinet secretary Shashank Shekhar Singh said the film could be screened after the objectionable portions was edited out.  Cinema hall owners must now: (i) give an affidavit that the objectionable line has been removed, (ii) ensure  the objectionable line is actually removed, and (iii) get the district magistrate to verify it.
The controversial line in the movie’s lead song  appears to mock the chamar  community, the BSP’s  support base. Opposition parties say the BSP’s reactions is uncalled for. “Such lyrics are part of folk music and should be taken in the right spirit,” said BJP leader Lalji Tandon.

“This is Mayawati’s ploy  to project herself as a messiah of the Dalits,” says Samajwadi Party leader Ashok Vajpayee.  “With  Yash Raj ji having apologised and removed the line from the film, we must lay things to rest,” says UP Cinema Exhibitors’ Association president Ram Narayan Sahu, also an SP MP.
