Firoze Khan’s RTI application regarding back-date registration of Mhada societies led to a broker giving a goon supari to kill him. Luckily, he survived a murderous assault on him. Cops made five arrests, but the main accused was at large

Firoze Khan, 35, almost got killed in his quest of information. The Malvani-based agent came to know that several Mhada societies in Charkop and Malvani areas were being registered on back date to beat the deadline of 2004, after which the process of registration was stopped.

According to police, Khan filed a Right to Information (RTI) application two months ago, seeking details about those societies. It stirred a horn’t’s nest, and led to Ismail Sayyed, a broker cum contractor, offering a Rs50,000 supari to a local goon, Amiruddin Talukdar, to get Khan killed.

A plan was drawn up. Early this month, Khan got a call from a woman, who introduced herself as Sara. She told him that she wanted to buy a flat in the Malad-Malvani area. Her budget she said was Rs15 lakh. When Khan asked how she got his number, the woman said that a friend gave it to her.

Makrand Ranade, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone XI), said that the two set up a meeting at 7 am on November 17, near Atul Tower in Kandivili to discuss Sa’a’s purchase. The woman called Khan early morning on that day and asked him what he would wearing. It would help her to identify him easily, she explained.

Khan reached the rendezvous at 7 am. Seeing no woman around, she decided to wait. Suddenly, he was attacked by three unidentified men, who repeatedly hit him on the head with iron rods. Bleeding profusely, he fell to the ground, and the attackers fled, thinking their target would succumb to his injuries.

Miraculously, Khan managed to drag himself to the nearest police station, and filed a complaint. Soon the cops traced Sara through her cell number, and found that she was actually, Hiral Jayanti Sharma, 19. Grilled by the cops, Hiral named her three associates — Talukdar, 25, Mohammad Shaikh, 20 and Shafi Shaikh, 23. She said that they had asked her to lure Khan to a vantage spot, posing as a client, and they would do the rest.

It did not prove difficult for police to arrest the three goons and make them spill the beans“ “Talukdar confessed that Sayyed and his manager, Akhtar Shaikh, gave him the contract to kill Khan. The hirings of Mohammad and Shafi, as well as that of Hiral as a bait, was done by Talukdar himsel”,” said Ranade.

Police went after the two, and netted Akhtar. But Sayyed, the main accused, gave them the slip. It was alleged that Sayyed wanted Khan dead as he felt that the information the latter was digging for would spell trouble for him. The five held have been remanded in  police custody till December 6. Hunt for Sayyed was on.
