The 10 clubs that were allotted large open plots by the BMC can breathe easy. For, the municipal chief has said that action will be taken against these clubs only if local people complain against them.
Addressing a press conference on Friday, Jairaj Phatak said, “I have not received any complaint against any club till now.” BMC had allotted the plots before the policy was approved last year.
The clubs, several being run by politicians from the ruling saffron combine, have built profit-making bars, lounges and banquets. The clubs have allegedly gone ahead with the constructions without the commissioner’s mandatory written permission.
Although the amenities built on open portions (67 per cent) were meant for locals, their entry has been restricted. And the clubs are allegedly flouting the contract conditions by conducting business before handing them over to BMC. On Thursday, BMC issued a notice to MIG Club in Bandra. The club has been asked to open the ground to local people for at least four hours — two each in the morning and evening. The club will have to display a board clarifying its caretaker status.
