Gameplay and storyline apart, ‘Mass Effect’ would be known for the interaction of characters in taking the story forward. This is perhaps the first game in which you see characters, with realistic features, behave like film actors. Cinema has finally made its way to the console.
Mass Effect is a single player sci-fi adventure set in the 23rd century. Commander Shepard is the protagonist of this futuristic game. As an elite soldier, Shepard has the responsibility of saving the Universe from ancient artificial intelligence.
Shepard has two soldiers for company. As the game progresses, one can substitute these soldiers depending upon the requirements of firepower and bionic expertise.
One can customise Commander Shepard’s looks and upgrade his armour that includes rifles, shotguns, medigel and grenades. You can choose what technical expertise he is going to be good at. For example, there are number of instances in the game where one needs to be good at decryption of the codes in order to gain access to a particular area. Of course Mass Effect has all the explosions and spectacular weapons which you will enjoy. Shepard has four types of guns and bombs at his disposal.
You can use any of the guns depending upon the range and nature of the target. Also you can make clever use of the bombs and bullets combo. You can fling grenades at your target in order to bring him out in the open and then fire at him.
The graphics, the weapon range and sound are top class. While the graphics are superbly done, the controls are spot-on. However, as mentioned earlier, what sets this game apart is the way the story unfolds and the involvement of characters in carrying the story forward. The expressions of characters convey their emotions perfectly and voice acting is top-notch. During the interaction, you can choose from different answers and the resulting situation arises.
Also what makes this game interesting is the interaction between humans and artificial life. Hard-core action addicts may find the pace of this game slow. However, those who are looking for a compelling game and wish to see human involvement in the evolution of the storyline, just like the movies, Mass Effect is just the game you were looking for.
