GUWAHATI: The situation remained tense in Assam as the week-long clash between adivasis and locals continued on Friday with the aggrieved tribals allegedly setting on fire several vehicles in Dibrugarh and held demonstrations in Tinsukia, Golaghat, Sibsagar and Kokrajhar districts.
"The situation remained tense in the districts," official sources said.
The sources said that suspected activists of the All-Adivasi Students Association of Assam set ablaze several motorcycles at Bosti line of Bordubi Tea Estate in the Doomdooma police station area this afternoon.
In Sonitpur district's Rangapara, indefinite curfew was relaxed for two hours from two pm to four pm today in view of no untoward incident reported since last night, district deputy commissioner Kamal Goswami said.
Rangapara and nearby areas were rocked by violence on Wednesday when adivasis, protesting against the assault on them in Guwahati on November 24, made an abortive bid to attack the police station there. The police fired in the air and lobbed tear gas canisters to control the mob.
In Dhubri district, the situation was tense after suspected adivasis attacked a Hindi-speaking family at Mushallpur village last night injuring three persons.
The situation in Barak Valley was also tense after clashes between tea garden workers and some youths at Hatigora in Cachar district on Thursday.
