FIIs sell shares worth Rs 979 cr on bourses

MUMBAI: Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) on Wednesday sold shares worth Rs 978.96 crore, even as stock market benchmark Sensex failed to sustain the gain recorded in early trade and closed 189 points down.

Domestic Institutional Investors, however, purchased shares worth Rs 331.82 crore, provisional data available on the Bombay Stock Exchange shows.

FIIs purchased equities worth Rs 3,192.91 crore and sold of Rs 4,171.87 crore.

Among other categories, non-resident Indians purchased Rs 1.47 crore shares, while proprietors sold equities worth Rs 83.17 crore. Brokers bought Rs 266.82-crore shares for their clients or retail investors.

The BSE barometer Sensex settled at 18,938.87 points, with a loss of 188.86 points from its previous close.
   
Stocks that witnessed the highest turnover were Housing Development Finance Corporation, Reliance Petroleum, GMR Infrastructure, Jindal Steel and Reliance Industries.
   
Shares worth Rs 291.87 crore of HDFC were traded on Wednesday, followed by Reliance Petroleum Rs 285.35 crore and GMR Infrastructure's Rs 221.21 crore.
   
The total turnover at Bombay Stock Exchange stood at Rs 7,472.89 crore with over 43.53 crore shares changing hands at the bourse.
