BHIWANI (Haryana): Concerned over female foeticide leading to a sharp decline in sex ratio in the twin states of Haryana and Punjab, Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Wednesday asked the youth and women to come forward and fight the menace.

"The women in Haryana are brave. We are proud of them. However, I feel sad when I hear about female foeticide. The youth and women must take it as a challenge so that the sex ratio in the state is improved and there are more women than men in the state," she said.

Equating the girls with Goddess Laxmi, she said the development was possible only if the state government and the society worked in tandem.

Sonia's concern about the female foeticide assumes significance as both Punjab and Haryana are the states with one of the lowest sex ratio in the country.
