MUMBAI: Judgement in murder case of fake stamp paper kingpin Abdul Karim Telgi's employee Christopher Chenappa Bhatti is expected to be pronounced by Sessions Court here this week.

According to the prosecution case, Bhatti worked for Telgi at his Chennai factory. He, along with one Suraj Butki, had "misappropriated" about Rs three lakh from the sale proceeds of fake stamps.

Butki, in turn, asked some of his associates to rob the money from them.

However, Telgi came to know about the misappropriation and brought Butki to Mumbai. On demand, Butki returned half the money with him and agreed to work for Telgi at his Pune office to reimburse the remaining money.

Meanwhile, Bhatti went to his native place - Khanapur.

Telgi's associate convinced him to come to Mumbai in August 2001.

Around that time, Telgi allegedly hired four people to kill Bhatti near the Minu Manor building at Cuffe Parade in South Mumbai.

Bhatti was reportedly attacked with hockey sticks on his head and died on the spot. The body was then taken in a car to Dharavi and dumped at Shahu Nagar.

Bhatti's body was found at the creek but could not be identified.

Later, police arrested accused Sajid in connection with the fake stamp paper scam who spilled the beans about the murder during interrogation. The case was then reopened and proceedings were initiated.

Additional Sessions Judge U D Salvi conducted the trial of seven accused - Abdul Karim Telgi, Mohammed Gous Sighavi, Sajid alias Yusuf Khan, Maqdoom Hussain Tadkod, Kalim  Bandenawaz Shamsher, Uday Ramkrishna Sawant and Telgi's nephew - Tabrez. The court has examined 34 witnesses in the case so far.
