'Govt to compensate kin of victims of Nandi firing, blasts'

Jyoti Basu said that relief would be given to kin of the victims of the Nandigram firing, and also to the kin of those killed in bomb attacks on the same day.

KOLKATA: A day after Mamata Banerjee flayed government for not compensating the kin of the victims of Nandigram police firing, CPI(M) patriarch Jyoti Basu  said on Friday that relief would be given to them, and also to the kin of those killed in bomb attacks on the same day.
    
Speaking to newspersons after a meeting of the party state secretariat, Basu said efforts were on to restore peace at Nandigram where fresh violence erupted in the past few days with people fearing reprisals after dismantling of police camps.
    
The Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee had on Thursday accused government not even issuing the death certificates of the victims of Nandigram firing.
    
Asked whether compensation would be extended to those who dead in recurring violence in Nandigram since early January, Basu said "let a list be prepared where it will be decided who will be given compensation or not on humanitarian grounds."
    
"Those who died in bombs thrown during the trouble (on March 14) will be given compesation besides those who died in police firing on humanitarian grounds."
    
Trinamool Congress-led Bhumi Ucched Pratirodh Committee has demanded that compensation should also be given to all those who died in violence in Nandigram since January.
    
Fourteen persons had died in Nandigram during police action on March 14 this year.
    
Asked whether the commission of enquiry by a retired high court judge into the death of Rizwanur Rahman should continue simultaneously with the CBI probe, he said Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee would brief newspersons later in the day in this regard.
