MUMBAI: JJ Hospital is all set for a major facelift. Union Health Minister Ambumani Ramadoss will arrive in the city on Saturday to present a Rs120 crore cheque to the state health department for the hospital’s upgrade. JJ Hospital is one among six hospitals across the country short-listed by the Union Health Ministry to be upgraded to the level of New Delhi’s All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).
Union Minister for Petroleum Murli Deora had earlier approached the Centre to accord AIIMS-status to JJ Hospital after the Maharashtra government expressed its inability to make fresh investments in the hospital. State Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh will felicitate both Ramadoss and Deora at a function tomorrow.
A health ministry official said, “The Maharashtra government had sent a proposal to the Centre listing the requirements for upgrading JJ Hospital to AIIMS-status. It is estimated that the state will require Rs20 crore for construction projects and another Rs100 crore for upgrading medical equipment in six departments of the hospital.”
A report compiled by the state health department revealed that medical facilities at JJ Hospital were deteriorating. The report said that important machinery - including CT Scan, X-Ray machines, magnetic resonance imaging and eco-cardiogram - were often non-functional. Several medical equipment need to be upgraded to improve medical services at the hospital.
JJ Hospital also has a severe shortage of doctors. Apart from this, the hospital’s medical college requires a major overhaul. Poor maintenance of the college’s medical library, a shortage of trained medical lecturers and inadequate laboratory facilities had been brought to the notice of the state government last month.
