Party questions Prime Minister Singh's credentials after he compared the Gujarat riots to holocaust

NEW DELHI: For the first time in the past three-and-half years since Manmohan Singh assumed the office of Prime Minister, the BJP on Friday questioned his credentials to lead the country.

The party was reacting to the prime minister's remarks on the Gujarat riots, comparing it to the holocaust, and terming the Agra Summit a fiasco.

The BJP said Singh had “lost his mental balance” and called his remarks “mental bankruptcy” of a “weak and desperate man”.

Party spokesman Ravi Shankar Prasad said: “Singh's tirade against the BJP on Thursday is not only unfortunate, but also outrageous. It shows how rattled he is by his own abysmal failure on an issue, which till last week was extremely important for the government.

Here is a much-weakened PM, who is hitting out at everyone. It is a fall-out of his inability to explain his turnarounds on core issues and his failure in politics and governance.”

Prasad questioned Singh's capabilities to lead the country, something that the BJP had never done in the past.

“Singh, who began as a teacher and then as a civil servant, is a late entrant in politics. His entry into politics was more by accident than by design as was his elevation to the office of PM.”

He added: “Conviction and commitment have never marked his politics, which is more of convenience, a reality which frequently manifests itself in his career profile.

He had staked his personal reputation on the Indo-US nuclear deal for the past two years, but had no difficulty in taking an astounding U-turn by stating that life does not come to an end if the deal does not go through,” he said.

“His recent actions have confirmed that he is the weakest PM since Independence, commanding no authority in the cabinet. A powerless PM, whose crumbling government has begun its rapid journey downhill has resorted to unbecoming comments,” he said.

“If the Gujarat riots are like the holocaust, then how would Dr Singh describe the mass killing of Sikhs in Delhi in 1984 with government help?" asked the BJP.

The party questioned why the CBI, which is directly controlled by the Prime Minister, closed all cases against 1984 anti-Sikh riot accused Jagdish Tytler. "Singh has also lost his mind if he thinks the Agra Summit was a fiasco,” Prasad said.
