LONDON: It seems that the film premier of controversial novel 'Brick Lane' has hit the brick wall in the United Kingdom.

Yes, Prince Charles has pulled out of the Royal gala screening of the movie fearing a backlash from the Bangladeshi community in Britain, the 'Daily Mail' reported here on Wednesday.

The critically acclaimed book tells the story of a Bangladeshi woman called Nazreen who moves to London to wed a man twice her age in an arranged marriage. But, it has been condemned for portraying the Bangladeshi community as ignorant and sexist.

"There has been quite a lot of controversy about that film which everyone was aware of. The appropriateness of the film chosen is important but so is the date. It is a mixture of both reasons.

"At the start, it had been one of a number of films proposed. None of the films and none of the dates worked," a Clarence House spokesman was quoted as saying.

It is now thought the screening of 'Brick Lane' directed by Sarah Gavron, due on October 29, will not go ahead -the second time in 61 years it will not happen. The embarrassing retreat came after the film was selected for the event.

"The lack of a Royal Film Performance in 2007 would affect the charity's finances. Brick Lane was nominated for the Royal Film Performance.

"We thought it was a beautiful film and one of the best independent British productions of the season," Peter Hore, the Chief Executive of the Cinema and Television Benevolent Fund which helps organise the screening, was quoted as saying.

Last year, attempts to film a big screen version of the book were met by protests from about 120 residents living in east London.
