JOHANNESBURG: Rapidfire half-centuries from captain Shoaib Malik and Younis Khan helped Pakistan beat Sri Lanka by 33 runs in a Super Eights match of the Twenty20 World Championship of cricket here on Monday.

Pakistan picked up two points while Sri Lanka got none.

Younis (51, 35 balls, 2x4s, 3x6s), who was adjudged the Man of the Match, and Malik (57, 31 balls, 4x4s, 2x6s) were also involved in a match-winning 101-run partnership for the fourth wicket after Sri Lanka had reduced Pakistan to 33 for three.

This stand helped Pakistan to 189 for six in the allocated 20 overs after being asked to bat first at New Wanderers Stadium.

Pacer Laisth Malinga was the most successful Sri Lankan bowler with three wickets for 43 while Dilhara Fernando took two wickets.

Sri Lanka also had a poor start as they lost their first three wickets for just 35 and never really recovered from that setback.

Although Chamara Silva (27 balls, 5x4s, 1x6) and Tillakaratne Dilshan (28 balls, 4x6s) made identical 38 to try and resurrect the innings after Sri Lanka had lost four wickets for 88, the team failed to put up a competitive total.

To add to Sri Lanka's woes, Shahid Afridi and Umar Gul - and also left-arm pacer Sohail Tanvir to an extent -- bowled miserly to restricted Sri Lanka to 156 for nine in 20 overs.

Afridi took three wickets while Asif and Gul bagged two scalps each.
