LUCKNOW: In a shocking incident, a student of a local management institute lost his mental stability after several months of brutal ragging.

MCA student Sanjay Pal Singh of Bareilly was living at a hostel here. Hostellers say he was being ragged by three other students for several months.

“He was asked to strip and do obscene acts… stories about his ragging I have now come to know from fellow students are horrendous,” Sanjay’s father Ajay told DNA. He said Sanjay was often being threatened on his mobile by two other senior students at the behest of these three.

Sanjay’s local guardian Sudhakar Singh said he had complained to the authorities a number of times, but his pleas went unheard.

On Saturday, while Sanjay was on his way to the institute, three seniors stopped him and abused him for lodging a complaint against them, and threatened that they would teach him a lesson. A thoroughly scared Sanjay rushed to his local guardian’s house and locked himself up in a room.

Sudhakar said Sanjay was shouting names of his tormentors and started throwing things around. He was then taken to a private nursing home, where he turned violent. From here, he was taken to the psychiatry department at King George’s Medical College.

“The student was beyond himself... we needed at least 10 people to overpower him,” said Dr Devashish Shukla. “He is suffering from acute psychosis normally caused by a shock,” he said.
