MUMBAI: For a person handling scores of divorce cases, maintenance petitions and child custody battles, filing disputes without voicing concerns in an environment affected by tense moments of bickering is bound to be a difficult task.

But Nazim Kazi (54), Registrar of the family court in Bandra here, manages to clear everything in silence as he lost his voice due to cancer of the foodpipe and his voice-box had to be removed in an operation.

This did not dampen his spirits and now he uses a machine called the electrolarynx (artificial larynx) to generate a robotic voice.

The electrolarynx is a hand-held, battery-operated device placed at the throat to allow speech. It is a medical device used to produce clearer speech by those who have lost their voice-box, usually due to cancer of the larynx.

Kazi, who has been serving at the family court since 1989, was appointed Registrar four years ago. Earlier, he was serving at Thane Metropolitan Court as the Superintendent.

He developed severe cold and began experiencing difficulty in swallowing food since March last year and within three months, his food pipe and voice box were removed a surgical oncologist in Nanavati Hospital.

Dr S Sarkar, who operated upon him, said "his voice box had to be removed as he was suffering from cancer of the foodpipe and the voice box is very close to it."

With four more years for retirement, Kazi has been carrying on with his work at the Family Court since more than a year without difficulty, he said in his mechanical voice.

The registrar deals with the staff members as well as the litigants and lawyers in electronic voice, with equal ease, carrying on with his day to day affairs in the court with precision.
