Three people, two of them minors, were crushed to death and another was injured when a truck ran over them in the pay-and-park area under the National Park flyover in Borivili (east) early morning on Friday. According to police, the tragedy happened around 4 am, when the victims were fast asleep.

The truck driver, Ram Bachan Singh, was reversing the truck, absolutely unaware that people were sleeping behind it. Realising his mistake, he fled with the truck, ultimately abandoning it at Bhiwandi. The vehicle was traced by the police.

The deceased - Anita Londhe (25), daughter Sushmita (7) and niece Neha Gaikwad (12) were sleeping behind the truck, while Anita’s husband Parimal was sleeping next to a pillar by the truck. Parimal esacped with minor hip injuries and was recuperating at Bhagwati hospital.

The Londhe and the Gaikwad families had arrived in Mumbai only on Thursday to make some money in the festive season. The came from Ashok Nagar in Wardha. “Many people sleep near the tour and travel shops by the highway. As it began raining heavily around 1.30 am, all of them took shelter under the flyover”, said Prahlad Suryavanshi, senior inspector, Kasturba Police Station.

“Thinking that the truck driver would not be back before morning, Anita, Sushmita and Neha slept on its rear side. Parimal and Anita’s brother Ishwar Gaikwad slept beside the truck”, said Suryavanshi.

As the driver began reversing, Parimal, who was near the pillar, felt immense pain on his hip and he raised the alarm. However, his voice did not reach Singh, who continued to reverse crushing the three. “The rear wheels crushed their heads, and all the three died on the spot”, said Suryavanshi.

Police have registered a case under section 337 and 304 (a) against the driver.
