MUMBAI: After Monday’s show of  Indian Cricket League, the Special General Meetings of the Board of Control for Cricket in India here on Tuesday will, predictably, be a serious affair.

The apparatchiks of the BCCI will sure ponder over ways to prevent the increasing infiltration of its players into the ICL but there are quite a few side issues that will also take some time of Sharad Pawar & Co.

The SGM, relating to the constitutional amendments, was initially expected to the main business — what with some grumblings among the members about the proposals — but after Monday’s development the focus will be on the ICL and its giant strides.

It is now more or less certain the Board will adopt a hardline approach towards Kapil Dev and other former internationals who have aligned with the ICL.

After months of dilly-dallying over deciding the fate of the chairman of the National Cricket Academy, who has dared the BCCI to take action against him, the Board is expected to take the ultimate measure against India’s only World Cup-winning captain. Others involved in the ICL like BS Sandhu, Madan Lal, Sandeep Patil too may get to hear the Board’s verdict on Tuesday.

The other business of the day will be about the constitutional amendments. But doubts remain over how far the Board will accommodate its vice-president Lalit Modi’s suggestions that it should have all office-bearers elected one year ahead of the schedule if it wants to amend the constitution to have a president-elect.

And how far Modi will go to press for his suggestions? Till late in the evening, there was no word from Modi. The amendment proposals on amendments on having minimum qualification for selection committee will have a smooth passage.

Board secretary Niranjan Shah said they are unfazed by the ICL show. “We’re not worried,” he said.

Will Dalmiya make the trip?

Even as Board members are grappling with the ICL issue, some of their attention will also be on developments in Kolkata. The Board is still not aware of its ‘expelled’ former president Jagmohan Dalmiya’s plans for the SGMs.

Having been armed with a Calcutta High Court order staying his expulsion, Dalmiya is entitled to be present at the meeting as the president of Kolkata-based National Cricket Club. If he were to attend the meeting, there will be a new twist to the SGM.

His presence may not make much of a difference to the resolutions, but the proceedings of the meeting will, surely, be hot.

A top Board official said they are unfazed. “If he has to come he will come. It is his decision,” he said. Till Monday evening, it was not clear whether the former president will make the trip to the city and make a visit to the new BCCI headquarters. When contacted, Dalmiya preferred to keep everyone guessing.

“I’ve got many calls. I’ve not yet decided,” Dalmiya told DNA.
