The plight of the disabled students has forced the Chancellor of University of Mumbai, SM Krishna, who is also the Governor of Maharashtra, to crack whip on varsity authorities.

Krishna has demanded detailed reports on the implementation of the three per cent quota for students with disability in every university affiliated institution.

The University of Mumbai has in turn blamed the city colleges for denying admission to disabled students. “The University has to abide by the directives issued by the Chancellor of the University on the implementation of the quota for students with disability.

We have asked for details from colleges on the admission process and the number of disabled students enrolled with them,” said AD Sawant, Pro-Vice-Chancellor.

The Governor's office has also asked the varsity authorities to notify the number of seats made available to students from the disabled category and the mechanism adopted while admitting such students.

Further, the Governor's office lambasted the University of Mumbai for not maintaining transparency in the admission process.

Officials from the Governor's office said on condition of anonymity that directives had been issued following several complaints received from disabled students regarding the failure of the university and its affiliated colleges to clearly notify the reservation policy in the admission prospectus.

A disabled girl student bore the brunt of authorirties' indifference when she had to enroll herself in a distant college.

Authorities denied her admission to a college of her choice, saying there was no vacant seat in any of those. Sources said that majority of the city colleges filled up the seats reserved for the disabled by enrolling the regular students. So, the disabled students were only left with remote colleges.

“To bring transparency in the admission of students with disability, the University of Mumbai should set up a guidance cell for them.

We have invited data from the University to ensure that the disabled quota in its various departments and affiliated colleges is implemented appropriately,” said Sitaram Kunte, secretary to the Governor.
