If some UK publishers have their way, Shakespeare will soon find himself fighting off competition from Superman, Tin Tin and other popular comics. His celebrated verses will be reworked into easy-to-read text, with colourful pictures for added attraction. However, while puritans are going ballistic over the impending ‘dumbing’ down of the famous Bard’s classical works, his famous fans in India couldn’t be more delighted…
Kabir Bedi, actor: I think this move would be great as it would open up a whole new audience to Shakespeare. However, for it to work the publishers would have to use modern language.
Siddharth Dhanvant Shanghvi, author: The Bard was as game to reinvention as Madonna. He’s probably grinning in his grave! Not only is his work a significant corpus of literature, but now popular culture is getting jazzed by him. That’s great!
Feroze Gujral, fashionista: I think it’s an excellent idea. Shakespeare is missing from most curricula today, so what better way to re-introduce him to young readers. He is after all one of the greatest writers of all times and references to his work are always made in our daily lives. It’s important for our children to grow up with classics, which is why it’s imperative we move with the times.
Sudarshan Shetty, artist: I think it’s great especially since it is a classic. It should lend itself to all forms. And really, nothing can ever take away from Shakespeare’s work.
Wendell Rodricks, fashion designer: A comic strip would be excellent as it is a form that appeals to the new generation as compared to regular books, which they may find heavy. Besides, Shakespeare’s works have already been translated into so many films, where the prose has been altered to suit the form. I just hope they dress the characters well!
