MUMBAI: Two suspected naxalites were arrested from a northeast suburb here and arms and explosives recovered from them, police said on Monday.

The duo was arrested from Govandi in an operation carried out by the Anti Terrorism Squad (ATS) on Sunday night, Joint Commissioner of Police K P Raghuvanshi said.

The accused were produced before magistrate P P Suroshe, who remanded them to police custody till August 22.

"We also found some naxalite literature in their possession", a senior ATS official added.

The court asked police to get a fresh medical examination of the duo done following their complaint that they were being ill-treated by police.

The two accused identified as Shridhar Krishnan and Vernon Gonsalves were booked under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and Arms Act.
