Case against Calicut University for disrespecting Tri-colour

MALAPPURAM: The authorities of Calicut University have allegedly shown "disrespect" to the national flag by hoisting it "upside down" on the Independence Day.

Police have registered a case against the authorities under Section 2 of Prevention of Insult to National Honour Act 1971 on the basis of a complaint from the pro-Congress Kerala Students Union, police said on Thursday.

According to the complainant, the tri-colour went upside down when the university Vice-Chancellor, Anwar Jahan Zuberi, hoisted it in front of the University Administrative Block at Tenhipalam in the district.

However, University authorities, when contacted, said soon after the mistake was noticed, the flag was lowered and hoisted correctly.

Tendering apologies for the "inadvertent mistake", Zuberi gave an assurance that action would be taken against those responsible for it.

The security officer had been asked to submit a report and there was no intention to dishonour the national flag, she said.

Meanwhile, in a fax message to the state Governor R L Bhatia, the Muslim Youth League sought appropriate action against the University Registrar for "disrespecting" the national flag.
