MUMBAI: A six-year old class II student allegedly drowned in the school pool while swimming in a north west suburb, police said on Wednesday.

Hare Krishna Uday Singh was swimming in the pool of Janaki Devi School in Andheri last afternoon with the help of a float. The boy could not hold on to the float and started drowning, they said.

"The school says one of the lifeguards on duty employed by them fished Singh out of the pool and took him to a private hospital from where he was transfered to the Cooper Hospital where he was declared as brought dead," Assistant Commissioner of Police (D N Nagar Division) Arun Awate said.

He said police has so far registered it as a case of accidental death but would soon book the school authorities as the death is suspected to have been caused due to neglect.

"The post-mortem report also rules out natural death. We will register a case of criminal negligence soon," he said.

The boy's father works in the UAE Embassy in Delhi and has arrived, Awate added.
