Family thankful for Haneef's unfair detention being highligted

BANGALORE: The family of Mohammed Haneef, which has been crying hoarse that Haneef had been unfairly detained in the failed UK terror plot case, on Friday said they were thankful to the Australian and Indian people and media for highlighting the issue and taking it up strongly.

Reacting to the news that the Australian police has decided not to seek further detention of Mohammed Haneef, currently being investigated in connection with UK terror plot, his wife Firdous said, "we are very happy to hear it".

"We are very thankful to the Australian people for taking up for a foreigner in such an assertive manner", an elated Firdous told on Friday.

"They have been very supportive and I must express my heartfelt gratefulness to them for taking up the issue and speaking up against Haneef's extended detention by the Australian police given the fact that they had not pressed any charges against him", she said.

"I am also thankful that here in India people were supportive", she said expressing a special thanks to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh who empathised with the family recently.

"We are very happy to hear the news that they have not sought the futher extension of his custody", Sohaib, the younger brother of Haneef said here.

He said they got to know of the news through the media and were still to hear from any official authorities on the matter.

"We are all waiting anxiously to hear the news that he will be released soon", he said while keeping his fingers crossed.
