BANGALORE: Despite the decision of Australian authorities to extend by four days the detention of Mohammed Haneef, a suspect in the failed terrorist attacks in Britain, his family here is hopeful that he will return safely with his "honour and dignity intact".

"We know he will come back and we are just waiting to have him back among us," Sohaib, Haneef's younger brother, told on Friday.

"We are hopeful that he will return with all his honour and dignity intact," said Sohaib, an engineering student.

The family, he said, had spoken to the Australian High Commission on Thursday and requested that it be allowed to speak with Haneef.

The High Commission had assured the family that it would be given an opportunity to speak to Haneef. "However, now it appears there is going to be some delay in it," he said.

The family now felt helpless and could only "wait and watch" the developments taking place.

"We cannot do anything right now except for making an appeal to get Haneef out of detention quickly," a family member said.
