Rains claim 17 in Gujarat

Swollen rivers inundate villages in MP, around 100 houses damaged in Kerala

AHMEDABAD/VADODARA/SURAT: In its first week, the monsoon has claimed at least 17 lives in different rain-related incidents across Gujarat. Ahmedabad registered 58 mm rainfall on Sunday evening.

"The state is likely to witness heavy to very heavy shower and thunderstorm within next 24 hours," said an officer at the state meteorology department. However, no rain-related casualty was reported from Ahmedabad, the officer added.   

Authorities at Ukai dam have started releasing 7,000 cusec water from the dam, which would be gradually increased to 28,000 by midnight (Sunday) for operating the hydro power station. The irrigation department has said additional 12,000 cusec water is likely to be discharged into Tapi river because of heavy rains, and have called for preventive measures.

Heavy rains have been forecasted for the state as the low pressure belt has shifted from the Bay of Bengal to Gujarat and Rajasthan. Such a shift lies for two-three days; during which the state could witness heavy rainfall, a senior observer at the weather department, Rajkot said.

Five persons died in Vadodara following heavy downpour in the region on Sunday. One Bhil Udaysinh (35) died due to lightening and four separate incidents of death due to drowning were registered. Three deaths have been reported from Navsari. Seven girls aged between 12 years and 15 years drowned on Sunday afternoon at a check dam at Waziravand in Kutch.

Heavy rains also lashed several areas of Madhya Pradesh with water from swollen rivers inundating several villages and destroying huts. Kerala's Idukki district was also badly affected as nearly 100 houses were damaged in landslides due to heavy rain.
