NEW DELHI: The south-west monsoon, stalled on the threshold of Maharashtra due to supercyclone Gonu, is expected to progress over the next three days, a weather official said on Monday.

"The monsoon current is rebuilding and revitalising in the Arabian sea and is expected to cover Maharashtra over the next 72 hours," the official said.

He said a strong current had developed over the Arabian Sea but supercylone Gonu, that had formed in the region and later hit Oman, caused "major disruption" in the progress of monsoon.

Monsoon has been active in the Bay of Bengal and has covered the entire north-east, sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim and some parts of Bihar.

"Conditions are favourable for further advance of southwest monsoon , parts of Jharkhand and Gangetic West Bengal," the official said.

Kerala, coastal Karnataka and Lakshadweep are expected to experience more rainfall over the next two to three days

The advance of rainfall in the northeastern and eastern regions could also bring relief to Delhiites who have been bearing the brunt of the scorching sun for the past few days.

Easterly winds blowing over the capital brought some relief to the capital this morning, a day after the mercury had touched 44 degrees Celsius.

Monsoon had set over Kerala on May 29, three days ahead of the normal onset date but weakened later due to unfavourable weather conditions.
