MSEDCL had submitted plans for 122 projects for incurring capital costs

Electricity consumers of the Maharashtra State Electricity Board (MSEB) may have to pay more if the regulatory commission accepts its plea. The three wings of the Board –  generation, distribution and transmission –  have submitted their proposals for incurring capital expenditures.

The Maharashtra State Power Generation Company Ltd (MahaGenco) is preparing a proposal for incurring capital expenditure to the tune of a whopping Rs42,000 crore, the Maharashtra State Electricity Transmission Company Ltd (MahaTransco) and the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd (MahaVitaran) are readying their plans to incur expenditure worth Rs15,000 crore each.

While the expenditure proposed by the generation wing of the Board could be justified as the state needs to expedite in adding additional capacity, those proposed by the transmission and distribution companies can be modified.

MSEDCL had submitted proposal for 122 projects for incurring capital expenditure - setting up of sub-stations to increase power supply, installing high voltage distribution system, replacing faulty meters and reducing power thefts.

Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission had approved 37 as they wanted the Board to come out with an investment plan and phase out capital expenditure as they had failed to provide electricity to its consumers. Claiming that the expenditure is required to reduce losses and improve efficiency, MSEDCL had appealed against this decision to the Appellate Tribunal for Electricity in New Delhi.

The ATE said the MERC has the right to impose conditions and modifications while accepting any pleas.
