MANILA: An Indian national was killed and a compatriot wounded in an attack by gunmen along a highway in a Philippine province on Sunday, police said.

Anil Kumar, 32, and Manjit Kaur, 25 were travelling in Lucban town in the eastern province of Quezon when the gunmen opened fire. Police said residents rushed the victims to hospital after the shooting.

Kumar sustained gunshot wounds in the chest and was declared dead on arrival, while Kaur suffered a bullet wound in the left arm.

Investigators said the victims, who were engaged in the money-lending business, were on their way back to nearby Lucena City after their routine collection in Lucban when they were attacked.

They have yet to determine a motive for the killing but robbery was ruled out after police recovered the cash the victims had collected from their clients in their vehicle.
