BANGKOK: Thailand's airport operator said on Friday it would impose new rules on liquids in airline passenger carry-on baggage in line with international safety standards.

Airports of Thailand (AOT), which runs six airports including Bangkok's sparkling new Suvarnabhumi Airport, said the new regulations would take effect on June 1. The measures apply for both domestic and international passengers.

Baby milk and medications will be exempt from the new rules but passengers are not allowed to carry liquids exceeding one litre, it said.

Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi airport, which opened in September last year, has capacity of 45 million passengers per year.

Thailand hopes the new airport will further boost the country's tourism industry, which accounts for six percent of the economy.
