Hunger does not strike human beings alone. A hungry stray dog that used to scavange outside a Chinese dhabba near Juhu church was stabbed to death by a dhabba employee. The dog that used to frequent the dhabba to eat leftover food was killed on Tuesday.

The accused Raju Gowda, 23, was arrested by the Juhu police and is now facing a three-year jail term. He has been booked under Section 11 of Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Gowda was produced on Wednesday, before 22nd Court, Andheri which remanded him in police custody for seven days.

Interestingly, while Gowda is charged as a dog ‘killer’, the owner of the joint, Rajiv Aggarwal is known to be a dog ‘lover.’ “Aggarwal was furious when he found that the dog had been killed. In fact, he was the one who filed the complaint,” said Senior Police Inspector, Pradeep Shinde. Fed up of warding off the dog, on Tuesday, Gowda threw a knife at the dog and killed it, said Shinde.

Anu Sawhney, chief functionary of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) said that the fine for the brutal killing of an animal was only Rs50. “The fine should be increased  and the punishment should be made more severe,” she said.
