“Based on the information provided by us, the Navy has detained Thakur. A police team has rushed to Goa,” the officer said. Kausambi Layek, who worked as a software engineer in Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), was found dead in room no. 209 of Sun-N-Sheel hotel in Andheri on Monday hotel. She had been shot three times on her head and neck. According to the police, Layek and Thakur met each other in Kerala in two years ago. "Layek had gone to Kerala as part of a training programme. She reportedly met Manish there and they became friends," said investigating officer and police inspector Pandit Kale, MIDC police station.

The police have also found records that both Layek and Thakur stayed in another hotel at Andheri (East). General manager, Hotel Sun-N-Sheel RB Singh told DNA that Layek and Thakur had come to their hotel on Saturday after they did not get accommodation in Hotel Classic Residency at J.B.Nagar, Andheri (East).

“Since there was no room available in Classic Residency on May 12, they requested us to provide the couple with a room," said Singh. DNA checked the hotel for details to find some interesting details. According to the records of Classic Residency, the duo had stayed in the hotel on two occasions earlier.

First was on March 23. During this visit Manish had written his name in the hotel register as Manish Thakur, while on the second instance on April 6, he had mentioned his name as Manish Malhotra. The addresses provided also are different from each other. In the first instance the address given is — Naval Base, Rameshwaram, Kochi, Kerala — 682004, while on April 6, the address was given as 502, Regent Apartment, Kochi, Kerala.

“The couple were regulars at the hotel. We, however, are not aware whether the addresses and names provided by them are genuine or fake,” said Jitesh Menjarkar, registrar of Classic Residency. According to the police, Thakur could have used a silencer in his gun since no one heard the gun-shots. “Layek’s family members are yet to come from Jharkhand. Also the post-mortem reports are awaited, which will clarify the exact time of death,” said Kale. The police, however, have taken statements of Layek’s friends and relatives. Based on the statements, the police found out that Layek's father had expired recently, while her younger brother is suffering from blood cancer. Layek was the sole breadwinner of her family.

Police found Layek’s rented apartment in Borivili locked. Her colleagues at the Tata Consultancy Services office in Bandra-Kurla Complex were shocked and mostly remained mum, when they were asked about Layek.
