CANBERRA: Scientists at Australia's University of Queensland are working on a technology to generate clean energy from brewery waste water by using bacteria that consume brewing waste such as sugar, starch and alcohol.

According to an AP report, the University is collaborating with beer maker Foster's for the experimental technology.

Taking note of the research, the Queensland state government is reported to have granted AU$140,000 ( $US 115,000) to the University, which is planning to set up a microbial fuel cell at a Foster's Brisbane brewery.

A waste-water expert explained that the fuel cell is a battery in which bacteria consume water soluble brewing waste to produce electricity and clean water.
