NEW DELHI: Patients in the Capital had a stressful day on Wednesday as one of the most populous government hospitals in the city remained shut for the day. A one-day strike had been called by the students, doctors and nurses in the Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Hospital, in response to the abysmal security cover that the hospital provides to its residents and doctors. Not surprisingly, the worst sufferers were the patients.

Both the out patient department (OPD) and the casualty department remained shut for the day. As a result, scores of patients were turned away from the hospital. Even those who were admitted had to bear the brunt.

RS Sharma was admitted to the hospital on the fourth of this month. He has severe head injuries and his relatives at the hospital were in tears. “No doctor has come in since the morning. Even the nurses are irregular. What will happen to my husband?” asked Suman Sharma.

The doctors on the other hand are adamant. “On Tuesday night a patient’s relatives threatened the doctor on duty in casualty and said they would kill him if he did not attend to the patient immediately. The patient was not serious and there were others who required urgent attention. There was no security present at that time. Also two students were robbed the same night at knife point in front of the main gate of the hospital,” says Abhishek Bansal, a doctor at LNJP.

Meanwhile, relatives were left with little choice but to sit with their heads in their hands and tears in their eyes, as all their appeals to doctors to treat patients fell on deaf ears.
