NEW DELHI: With the CPI (M) taking a hard stand against any discussion on Nandigram, the government was forced to adjourn the Lok Sabha on Tuesday, a day before the first phase of the budget session was to conclude. The Rajya Sabha will be adjourned on Wednesday.

With communication between the Left and the government nearly breaking down, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has invited senior Left leaders for dinner on Wednesday night even as corridors of Parliament was abuzz with talks of Samajwadi Party and a section of BJP leaders contemplating a no confidence motion against the UPA government.

Senior BJP leaders, who wanted to corner the CPI (M) on the Nandigram carnage, later said they rejected the no trust motion proposal as the move would only be counter productive as it would unite the UPA and its allies.

Amidst mounting differences over a number of issues, the relations between the CPI (M) and the UPA have of late touched a new low.

The last UPA-Left coordination meeting was held on November 13 and even the customary budget eve meeting between the finance minister and the Left leaders did not take place this year. The Prime Minister’s dinner is expected to resume the dialogue process between the two sides.

With the BJP disrupting the House demanding a discussion on Nandigram for the fourth consecutive day, the Lok Sabha Speaker adjourned the House till April 26 when the House reassembles after the recess. Towards the fag end of the day, Cauvery issue raised by Karnataka MPs and objected to by the Tamil Nadu members created bedlam in the House.

Even as the BJP insisted on an adjournment motion to discuss the Nandigram with the leader of the Opposition LK Advani serving a notice, the government under pressure from the CPI(M) maintained that law and order was a state subject and hence cannot be discussed in Parliament.
