Rina Singh’s first book, to be released this week, will give systematic tips about knowing, understanding and organising an Indian wedding.
Is there a wedding in the family? What will the bride wear? What are the different menus for the different ceremonies? How to prepare the guest list? ‘The Wedding Planner’ will help answer all these questions and more.
Rina Singh’s first book, to be released this week, will give systematic tips about knowing, understanding and organising an Indian wedding. “In our family, we had a tradition of maintaining a register about the various weddings with significant notes on the ceremonies,” says Rina.
“The register had details of the menus before the actual day of marriage, list of guests, their arrival place and time etc. We used to circulate this 15 year old register among friends and family to help them during weddings in their family,” she added. So when Penguin approached her three years ago to publish it in the form of a book, she agreed.
From detailed rituals in Sikh and North Indian vedic weddings and their meaning, the book has minute details of what the bride will wear on which day, what her parents and siblings will wear. It also has a complete list of groceries, to spices to stocking up the bar.
“Weddings are so full of confusion. I wanted to put together all the thoughts in this book which can be used as a reference diary,” adds Singh. The coffee-table book has been designed to fill in the details of the wedding planning for organisers and be used whenever the need arises.
“My idea was to help make weddings a simple and traditional affair. Instead of hiring wedding planners, his book encourages people to look at the concept of old-fashioned weddings that is meant to strengthen family bonding,” adds Singh.
