MUMBAI: The anti-corruption bureau of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Friday raided 27 premises in Mumbai and Thane belonging to, among others, Additional Commissioner of Income Tax Ajay Kumar Singh, Joint Commissioner of Customs BP Singh, and a central excise inspector.

The raids came just a day after the income-tax (I-T) department launched search and seizure operations against medical facilities, caterers, and other service providers in the city.

The CBI raids, conducted on 21 premises in Mumbai and six outside the city, also covered a chartered accountant, two tax consultants who are not CAs, and two income-tax touts.

A CBI officer said: “We raided five apartments owned by AK Singh and BP Singh at Altamount Road, Andheri, Parel, and Thane. There were not many cash seizures, except at the residence of the CA, where we came upon Rs41 lakh.”

Of the five apartments, the CBI had opened three and conducted searches while two more remained to be searched at the time of going to press.

AK Singh was in the news in 2002 following a drunken brawl at a city five-star facility.

Singh was transferred out of Mumbai thereafter and took charge of his post in New Delhi after initial resistance. Two years later he returned to Mumbai on a fresh I-T assignment.

BP Singh was also transferred out of Mumbai a while ago. His relieving letter was issued only a month ago. And Singh was yet to comply with his transfer order and the CBI sleuths who raided his residence at Wadala found him at home.

All the central government employees as well as private persons raided on Friday were taken to the CBI office at Tanna House to record their statements. Hence, none could be contacted.
