Instead of heading for the examination centre on Wednesday morning, Nachiket Chandragiri, a Standard XII student of St Xavier’s College, marched up to the Bombay High Court. Denied his hall ticket for the Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) exams which began on Wednesday, Chandragiri moved the court to save his academic year.

Hearing the “urgent matter” out of turn at 11 am, Justice JN Patel and Justice SC Dharmadhikari allowed Chandragiri to appear for the Marathi exam and directed the college to release his hall ticket. On being told that the exam had already begun at 11 am, the judges ordered that Chandragiri be allowed to sit for the paper from 12.30 pm and be given full three hours to complete it. Chandragiri, 17, had been issued a hall ticket for the HSC exams by St Xavier’s College.

“However, on February 7 the college took away his hall ticket without giving him a hearing,” said Chandragiri’s lawyer AM Ranpise. The Science student was later informed that he had failed to meet the minimum attendance requirement, but was not provided any other details. When all efforts failed, Chandragiri, a Chembur resident, moved the HC seeking urgent relief. His lawyer argued that the college’s “arbitrary” action would ruin Chandragiri’s academic record. Chandragiri had secured 80.26 per cent in his SSC exams.

Ranpise also pointed out that Chandragiri was to appear for the IIT-JEE in April. Observing that the “bright student’s career should not be jeopardised”, the judges allowed him to appear for the exams. However, the declaration of his results would be subject to the outcome of the petition. If the HC upholds the college’s action, it could direct the HSC board not to declare Chandragiri’s results. Chandragiri wrote his exam at Hinduja College near Opera House.
