When Sandeep Bharmal, 27, leapt to rescue a damsel in distress, he did not reckon the danger he was throwing himself into. The moment he heard wails of a woman whose chain had been snatched, he leapt to catch hold of the robbers, but got shot at on his right arm at Shri Krishna Nagar in Borivali at 2.30p.m on Sunday.

Bharmal was rushed to Bhagwati hospital and was later shifted to MM Hospital at Dahisar.

Thanking his stars, Bharmal told DNA, “I heard a woman screaming for help. Immediately, I jumped on the robbers who were trying to flee in their motorbike,” he said, looking at his bandaged arm.

“I caught one of them by the collar, but the other pulled out a revolver and shot. I managed to duck at the right moment,” he said, looking up as if to thank God. The incident happened when Jayshree Naik 30, an MTNL employee, was returning from a wedding.

“The robbers snatched gold chain from Naik and were trying to flee from the spot. Naik then started shouting. On hearing the shouting, another pedestrian and Bharmal pounced on the motorcycle and made a valiant attempt to stop the robbers,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP Zone XII) Shivaji Bodke said. He added that one of the robbers then fired at Bharmal, which hit him on his right shoulder.

“I would have been successful inn catching them, had not they fired me. My family was scared after they learnt that I have been shot at,” said Bharmal. The robbers abandoned their motorcycle (MH-02-G-282) near the highway and fled. The police then reached the spot and rushed Bharmal to Bhagwati Hospital, from where he had been transferred to MM Hospital in Dahisar (West). Naik in her statement to the police said, “I was scared after they snatched my gold chain. I feel equally sad that a person, who tried to stop them, suffered bullet injuries.”

The police have prepared a sketch of the accused duo. “We will send the sketches to police stations across the city and have also sent a wireless message,” said senior police inspector, Dahisar police station Ravi Thakur.
