LAHORE: The suicide bombing at the Marriot Hotel in Islamabad on Friday was a possible attempt by some Kashmiri militant group to disrupt the Indian Republic Day reception. The reception was being hosted by the Indian High Commissioner to Pakistan, Satyabrata Pal, at the same hotel.
Intelligence sources say the suicide bomber was a well-built young boy who could possibly be a Kashmiri militant going by his looks. The attacker, in early twenties, was wearing a white shalwar kamiz with a Kashmiri shawl and a Chitrali cap. However, the sources are not ready to name any Kashmiri militant group, saying that it might be the act of an individual.
No one has taken responsibility for the bombing, which took place in the high security zone of the federal capital at around 2:37pm, hours before the holding of the reception by the Indian High Commission. However, following assurances given and strict security arrangements made by the Pakistani authorities, the reception was held as per schedule at the same hotel, which is located near some important government buildings.
The Indian High Commissioner Satyabrata Pal said that India and Pakistan would fight terrorism together and such attacks would miserably fail to derail the peace process.
Satyabrata Pal said, “This attack establishes that terrorism has no borders and it is a common enemy. We must fight this common menace together in order to defeat it.” Security has been put on high alert and all airports of the country have been declared high security zone following Friday’s suicide blast. Search process has been brought to 100 per cent at airport search counters whereas the Airport Security Force (ASF) has started car searching in parking areas.
