It’s rumoured that you’re trying to convince Yash Chopra to sip coffee on your show?

Yes, I’d love to get him. It would be an honour. But, I’m wondering whom to pair him with because his son (Aditya Chopra) won’t come.

Has your popularity with ‘Koffee with Karan’ (Star One, Star Plus) increased?

Surprisingly, people know me more for the show than for my movies. That’s dangerous! What started as a hobby has become so big.

Is it more lucrative than creative?

It’s more creative. My chartered accountant will vouch for this! I’ve entered people’s drawing rooms. It has satisfied the frustrated actor in me.

Do you now empathise with journalists?

Totally! I am a journalist at heart. I wanted to be a critic when I was 15, but it didn’t work out. Today I feel like a member of the media.

What kind of guest brings out the best in you?

I am as good as the guest. If they are fun and irreverent then I’m good. If they are stiff and do not open up, I can’t do anything about it. I like guests who are easy, chatty and mad.

Like, I interviewed Mallika Sherawat and she was a delight. She was full of answers, quotes and comments.

Do you agree that Mallika says things for effect?

Well, so do I! We are in the business of making an impact and being sensational. Who wants to be quiet and in the aisles when you can scream from the roof tops?

Do your guests request not to be asked certain questions?

No, everyone comes because they trust me. They know that I’d never offend them on TV. I’d never cross the line. I’d push the envelop but never tear it.

If you were to invite Ram Gopal Varma on your show, whom would you pair him with?

I’d not pair RGV with anyone. I’d ask him to come solo because I have so much to ask him. And, I’d gift him all my DVDs in the hamper, so that he gets horrified the whole year through.

Has the show affected your relationship with the guests for the better or worse?

That depends on what happens during the show. I hope everybody has a sense of humour. I enjoy it when people say strange things about me. It makes life more exciting.
It would be so boring if everybody kept praising everybody. I love controversial statements. Showbiz is all about it!

What if your guests want to  drink nariyal pani instead of coffee?

They can have anything as long as it’s in the coffee mug!
