The campaign for the Thane Municipal Corporation and battle for supremacy turned violent on Saturday night  after supporters of local Republican Party of India  leader Gangaram Indise allegedly assaulted a Bahujan Samaj Party candidate from ward number 16 (Shastri Nagar, Pereira Nagar) Ramesh Mahure.

Mahure was seriously injured in the assault and was rushed to the Thane Civil Hospital. Indise supporters also attacked election office of Ramesh Indise and damaged his office on Sunday.

According to sources, Gangaram Indise and his brother Appasaheb Indise have allegedly been “dominating” the area for the last few decades. However, Gangaram and Appasaheb Indise got a major blow when their nephew Ramesh Indise not only joined the Shiv Sena, but also got party ticket from ward number 16 for TMC elections. Indise got another jolt when Ramesh Mahure filed nomination on BSP ticket from the same ward. Indise started garnering considerable public support from the area.

At least 20 Indise supporters allegedly went to Mahure’s Pereira Nagar house late last night and abducted him. The accused took him near statue of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar and allegedly assaulted him with cricket bat and stumps. An offence has been registered against Gangaram Indise. Deputy Commissioner of Police, Zone I, Madhukar Pandey said, “An offence has been registered and we are investigating the matter. Those found guilty will be arrested and soon.”
