SRINAGAR: Moral policing proved costly to the veiled women brigade of radical Dukhtaran-e-Milat (DeM), when the police held six activists for ransacking a cyber café in down town for its alleged “immoral activities”.

It was after a long time that DeM joined the morality bandwagon in Kashmir. Police said a group of burqa-clad activists of DeM raided the Friends Cyber Café in Khanyar and tried to beat up the girls who were surfing the net. Police said they were supported by some males who gave them cover when they raided the café. Police have also arrested six males for facilitating the raid on the café.

When people tried to resist, the activists raised a hue and cry. Some of the people informed the nearby police station which immediately raided the café and arrested seven DeM activists. They were whisked away to the Khanyar police station.

Senior SP of Srinagar, Syed Afad-ul-Mujtaba said police have lodged a case under section 148, 336 and 427 RPC against the people who ransacked the the cyber café. “No body has a right to take law into their hands. People cannot be allowed to ransack the property of people in the name of morality. They have ransacked the premises of people running a lawful business,” said Afad. The SSP said the morality drive is fraught with danger because the women activists can dub anyone as debauch making his life miserable in the society.

“They cannot call anybody debauch. People have to live in society and if you give some bad name to a person it will have serious ramifications. The girls had gone to the cyber café to check results,” said Afad.

After the arrest, some people took to streets and pelted stones on the police. Police immediately swung into action and brought the siutation under control. There was a mixed feeling among the crowd. Some were protesting against the harassment of the young girls who were surfing the net, while others were annoyed with the police.
