MUMBAI: Good things happen to those who work hard. Karan Rastogi is the latest example.

Only a week ago, the 20-year-old was basking on his success at the Chennai Open — a success that saw his ranking jump by over 100 places and something that came in as an icing to his consistent performances over the past couple of months. But there were some concerns nonetheless.

Concerns regarding how to carry forward his new-found success, about how to plan out a career move so that his ranking keeps on increasing and about how to develop his game that takes him to a different level — one which will put him above the also-rans. Karan definitely had plans of his own but there was an impediment — he had no one to back his endeavour and all his efforts had fallen to deaf ears. Seven days later, it’s a different story altogether. The upcoming player’s wish has finally come true. Dewan Housing Finance Corporation (DHFL), on Tuesday announced its decision to sponsor the player initially for a period of one year. The sponsorship will amount to about Rs 60 lakhs.

Needless to say, Karan was in an upbeat mood. “It’s encouraging. Finally a burden is off my shoulders,” said Karan. “I can really go all out, have proper training and play my game now without having to bother about anything else,” he added.

And with the monetary backing behind him, the 20-year-old has more plans up his sleeves as well. Karan, who was until now concentrating on the upcoming Futures in Kolkata and New Delhi, now has more elaborate plans.

“I plan to play in various events in Asia, like in Malaysia, Vietnam and would also play in a few tournaments in the US,” he said. “However, I’d also like to train properly. So, I’d definitely find a balance between the number of tournaments I play in and my training regime,” he added.

The city-based player will continue training at the Nick Bollettieri Academy and has plans towards improving each aspect of his game. “I’ve a better serve now, with a longer swing but I know it needs further improvement, like the other aspects of my game,” he said, matter-of-factly.

Karan also hopes to play in the qualifying rounds of major events. “I’m ranked 370 now. To play in a Grand Slam, I need to be around the 260 mark. So if I do well in the next couple of months then who knows...” he signed off.
