MUMBAI: In a bid to end the leadership vacuum at Mediacom, GroupM India CEO Vikram Sakhuja could be moving key player Tarun Nigam as the Delhi operations head of the media specailist, say sources. Nigam in all probability would be replacing Satyajit Sen in Delhi, former vice-president of Mediacom and close confidante of the-then president Jasmin Sohrabji. GroupM was not available for comment.

Sources say that GroupM had been contemplating giving Nigam a larger role as a branch head for quite a while now, and this seemed like a good time to take the leap. Nigam’s appointment comes as an answer to all the critics, who said that GroupM looks outward when it comes to filling employee blanks and perhaps does not give as much attention, to nurturing talent from within. Nigam moves in from Maxus (also a GroupM company) where he was senior business director, in charge of the Honda business.

Mediacom has seen some rough weather recently with presidents Jasmin Sohrabji and Harish Shriyan putting in their papers, and Delhi vice president Satyajit Sen leaving the agency to join Zenith Optimedia as executive vice-president. Another cause for worry for the management at GroupM is that consumer products major Johnson & Johnson has put its leviathan $3 billion media business for a review globally, putting the chunky 100 crore media business of Mediacom in the balance here. A decision is expected towards early 2007.

Mediacom is J&J’s Media Agency of Record and does media planning and buying across all J&J categories here: baby, wound care, women’s health, skin care and adult toiletries. Other businesses for Mediacom include Wrigley’s, Deutsche bank, Audi, etc.

As is known WPP Group’s acquisition of US-based rival agency network Grey Global Group internationally - Mediacom’s parent company -brings Mediacom India operations under the WPP-owned GroupM umbrella. Some say this may have catalysed the various executive departures that the agency has seen in recent times.
