LONDON: Princes William and Harry have been briefed on the conclusions of a British probe into the 1997 death of their mother Diana, Princess of Wales, news media reported on Wednesday.

Clarence House, the official London residence of Prince Charles and his two sons, "was not in a position" to confirm the reports carried by the BBC, Sky News, and the Press Association, a spokeswoman said.

According to widespread leaks, the report by former Metropolitan Police commissioner Lord John Stevens will confirm the overall findings of a French probe that it was just an accident, dismissing claims of an elaborate plot.

It remained unclear if the latest report will silence plot theorists who accuse British intelligence agents of assassinating the princess in a Paris underpass to stop her remarrying.

After three years of investigation Stevens has concluded that Diana died in a traffic accident after her driver lost control of the car while drunk at the wheel, the leaks said.

Fleeing paparazzi photographers, Diana, 36, her boyfriend Dodi Fayed, 42, and their chauffeur Henri Paul, 41, were killed in the car crash in the underpass in the early hours of August 31, 1997.

Bodyguard Trevor Rees-Jones survived.

A two-year investigation in France blamed Paul for losing control of the black Mercedes because he was driving too fast while high on drink and prescription drugs.
