MOSCOW: Russian doctors treating former prime minister Yegor Gaidar have detected symptoms that "do not correspond to any known illness" but cannot say for sure that he was a victim of poisoning, Gaidar's office said on Tuesday.

"The sudden development of the illness, the multi-faceted nature of the symptoms, do not correspond to any known illness," although "doctors cannot unequivocally diagnose poisoning," the office said in a statement.

Gaidar collapsed during a visit to Ireland on November 24, a day after former Russian secret agent Alexander Litvinenko died of radiation poisoning in a London hospital.

Gaidar's condition has improved and he was released from hospital on Monday.

"The material on which the doctors' conclusion is based says that the clinical symptoms of the illness could be based on the influence of a toxic factor," the statement on Tuesday said.

"At the same time, doctors cannot unequivocally diagnose poisoning since the particular poisonous substance to which the development of the illness could be linked was not identified," the statement added.

The statement was released by the Institute for the Economy in Transition in Moscow, which is headed by Gaidar.

Gaidar's daughter, Maria, and his spokesman Valery Natarov have said that he could have been the victim of poisoning.

Gaidar fell unconscious and started vomiting blood soon after eating a fruit salad and drinking a cup of tea.

Irish authorities have said that Gaidar was not poisoned.
