The Dhirubhai Ambani International School’s Sport & Cultural Fest was a regular school sports day and more

The Dhirubhai Ambani International School’s Inaugural International Sport & Cultural Fest was nothing if not resplendent. From impeccable parking, security and seating arrangements to the enthusiasm and zeal the children displayed, this event was worth every bit of a parent’s time. And here was one event where the chief guest wasn’t nearly as important as the performers, even though that guest was Sachin Tendulkar.

Sure, this is everything a regular school sports day is. And more. Adding to the talent and sporting spirit of the school were delegates from five other international schools from India’s neighbouring countries — China, Nepal, Thailand, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.

"All the children — from our school and the others — are very excited by the whole concept. It’s such a great opportunity for them to meet each other and spend time,” says Nita Ambani, the moving force behind the school and the international presence in particular.

Here for a little over 10 days, the children have been to South Mumbai and done all the regular touristy things.

“We really loved the sea, though we didn’t go to the beach,” says Tashi Ganden, one of the seniors of the 20-member delegation from Budhanilkantha School in Nepal. While the heat or the lack of cleanliness didn’t affect the Thai and Chinese kids as much as their inability to communicate without the help of their teachers. “I talk to others and translate for the kids,” said Aileen Ming, headmistress of the Harbour View School in China.

And when the school is DAIS, can celebrities be far behind? Spotted heading right to the back of the seating area were Arjun Rampal and wife Mehr Jessia, dressed down and comfortable. Visibly excited mommy was Juhi Chawla who came to cheer her daughter on. “Did you see the performance? I don’t think there’s a better place for my daughter to be in,” she said just after her daughter Jhanvi’s performance.

“I loved the performance. What did you think of it,” quizzed a friendly Anjali Tendulkar adding, “I attend the kids' functions all the time but this is the first time Sachin's come and he was telling me how thrilled he was at the way things are done.” “I attend every occasion my daughter participates in,” said Shekhar Kapoor who has just flown in from London for the event. The two-day sports fest ends on Saturday, 11 November.
