ISLAMABAD: Namira Salim, a Paris-based Pakistani artist and goodwill ambassador, is to be Pakistan’s first spacewoman scheduled to go into Virgin Galactic Spaceship in 2008.

Following her presentation at a news conference on Thursday, media reports projected Namira as a multi-dimensional personality who is to publish her first book of poetry and, inspired by Urdu ghazals, make music videos and sing.

The Nation quoted her as saying that she was “born with a dream” and that her becoming an astronaut would be fulfilment of that dream. She was presented at the news conference by the high-profile Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Tariq Azim and top ministry officials.

Gifted with diverse creativity, Namira, who is a sculptor and painter, has long played the role of a goodwill and peace ambassador.

Her art works — have been exhibited during top humanitarian summits at the UN, Unesco and during the historic SAARC Summit in Pakistan two years ago.

Upbeat media reports recalled that the minister had in May this year introduced Adam Khan, Pakistan’s first formula-one driver who represents the country in international car racing events.

“And now we have a daughter of our country who will take our flag into space,” Azim was quoted by The News.

The minister said the world would witness that Pakistani women could stand by their male peers in all fields. He said the space venture of the first Pakistani woman would set a new direction for other Pakistani women and encourage them utilise their talent to the fullest.

He said Pakistanis were contributing in various constructive fields and have earned good name at home as well as abroad.

Namira’s presentation was part of “Faces of Pakistan”, projecting achievers under the “Pakistan’s Image” project, The News said.
