MADRID: Despite the declarations of the Brazilian star Kaka that he wants to stay at AC Milan, Real Madrid have not given up on the prospect of signing him.

Sports papers Marca and AS both claimed on Sunday that Kaka is keen to come to Madrid, and that his father has already agreed personal terms with Pedja Mijatovic, Real's new sporting director.

According to Marca, "Kaka is really desperate to leave Milan, and will do whatever is necessary to force his departure".

Marca compares the situation to that of Ronaldo in 2002, when the Brazilian star striker gave Inter Milan no choice but to let him leave for Madrid.

Why are Real so obsessed with signing Kaka? Because new president Ramon Calderon promised, in his election campaign, to bring in Kaka, Cesc and Robben. He vows that his legitimacy will be in jeopardy unless he keeps his promise.

An online poll taken by Spain's leading daily El Pais shows that Kaka is the priority for 69 percent of "madridista" fans, above Fabregas, Robben, Reyes, Mahamoud Diarra and Ashley Cole.

Cole might be brought in to replace Roberto Carlos, who is about to sign for Turkey's Fenerbahce.

When Ruud Van Nistelrooy was presented to the fans on Friday, around 200 of them started chanting for Kaka, making Calderon distinctly uncomfortable.

Most Real fans are tired of the club bringing in yet more veterans.

All three signings so far this summer - Fabio Cannavaro, Emerson and Van Nistelrooy - are over 30, bringing the total of Real players over that crucial age to 10.

Moreover, Real desperately need a midfield organiser due to the retirement of Zinedine Zidane.
