PUNE: With the intensity of rains lessening in the past 24 hours and reduced discharge from dams in western Maharashtra, the situation in flood-hit districts of Pune, Kolhapur, Satara and Sangli has begun to improve, officials said on Sunday.

Many low-lying areas in these districts had been inundated following heavy rainfall in the catchment areas of rivers and dams, compelling the local administration to alert people living near the river beds and seek the army's help to carry out rescue and relief operations.

Although the army was not deployed in Pune, the troops helped in operations in the other three districts.

In Pimpri-Chinchwad municipal limit of Pune district some 175 families were shifted, while 295 families were taken to safer places from the Pune Municipal Corporation limits, Pune Resident Deputy Collector Suhas Divse said.

Divse said no heavy rains had been experienced since Saturday night and the situation has improved considerably with water reducing by around 1.5 feet from inundated areas.

He said that the discharge from Khadakwasala Dam has been reduced to 46,000 cusecs (cubic feet per second) from the earlier 50,000 cusecs.

In Nasik, people living along the banks of river Godavari were alerted following rise in water level after the release of 12,648 cusecs water from the Gangapur dam, officials said.

Rivers Girna, Banganga, Behadi, Punad and Darna were flooded following good rainfall in catchment areas, they said.

Up to 12,648 cusecs (cubic feet per seconds) water has been released from the dam since Thursday following incessant rains, they said.

The water touched Ramsetu bridge and the famous Dutondya -Maruti last evening and villagers of Saykheda, Chandori, Taked villages in the district have been alerted against the rising water level, the sources said.

The Gangapur dam, the main source of water for Nasik city  was filled up to 85 per cent, forcing the irrigation department to release more than 12,000 cusecs of water from it step by step.

Bhandardara dam near Ghoti was also filled to capacity, reports reaching the district headquarters said.
